Letting my head fall against Amos’s shoulder, I wished Bernadette were here. Not only would she be the perfect person to help us ferret out these lost girls’ stories, I’d have my sister around to talk everything through. I had left my life of solitude, but we were further from each other than ever before. Not just the distance. She was literally half the world away. It was the emotional distance that troubled me the most.

Part of it was that while she was out researching, she was often out of cell range, so our daily calls had dwindled to when she had time and service. Even when we did talk, the conversations focused more on checking up on me and telling me what I was doing wrong. When we were younger, I could tell her anything. She was always there for me, without judgment or reproach. That had changed after Ben died, and worsened more than I ever could have predicted after I got involved with Ms. Sinclair’s murder.

Now I was seeking comfort from a guy I’d only known a few days. His arm around my shoulders was a comfort, though. Baxter sat less than a foot away looking irritated over something and regretful about Yasmin’s situation, but he wasn’t focused on me or my self-pity. I’d told Rapha I would help him find his sister. When I made the promise, I didn’t really know how I was going to fulfill it, but now I worried I’d fail to live up to my word.

Whoever took Yasmin seemed to be not just some dirty guy after a pretty girl, but an organization well-practiced at stealing young lives. What was one accident-prone culinary student supposed to do about that?

Pushing away from Amos, I said, “I need to call Rapha. Do you mind letting me out?”

Baxter tensed next to me. “Remember what happened last time you left a club on your own?”

Amos gave me a curious look, but I only responded to Baxter. “I didn’t leave the club on my own. I was dragged out.” I scowled at his insinuation that I was looking for trouble. “Besides, I was planning to go out the front and stand by the bouncer. Rapha won’t be able to hear me in here. I’ll be right back.”

Sliding out of the bench seat, Amos didn’t offer an opinion on the matter. When Baxter moved as well, probably to follow and babysit me, I glared at him and walked off. I was halfway to the entrance before I snuck a glance behind me and sighed in relief when I spotted him still talking to Amos at the table. Curiosity over what they might have been discussing slowed my steps for a moment, but I shook my head and kept going. Rapha needed an update, and having friends and family in Brazil might give him connections no one else had to find more details about this organization.
